Why Hands-On Experience Matters

I am Justin Knox, and I lead Knox Pest Control in Columbus, GA, a fourth-generation family business built on service, trust, and consistency. One of the biggest advantages I bring to this role is hands-on experience. I did not start my career in an office. I started in the field, learning the work from the ground up.

That experience has shaped everything about how I lead today. It has helped me understand what our technicians face each day, what customers expect, and what it takes to deliver consistent results in a demanding industry. In pest control, hands-on knowledge is not just helpful. It is essential.

Learning the Business in the Field

Before I ever thought about leadership, I spent years working as a technician. I handled service calls, inspected properties, treated infestations, and interacted directly with customers. That time in the field taught me more than any classroom or manual ever could.

Every home and business presents a different challenge. No two pest issues are exactly the same. Some require careful inspection and patience, while others need quick action and problem solving. Learning to adapt in real time is a skill that only comes from experience.

Those early years helped me understand the importance of doing the job correctly the first time. Customers depend on us to solve problems that affect their homes, health, and peace of mind. There is no room for guesswork.

Understanding Customer Concerns

One of the most important lessons from hands-on work is understanding customer concerns on a personal level. When someone calls a pest control company, they are often stressed. They may be dealing with damage to their home, fear of infestations, or frustration from repeated problems.

Being on the front lines showed me how important it is to listen carefully. Customers do not just want a solution. They want to feel heard and understood.

When technicians take the time to explain what is happening and what steps will be taken, it builds confidence. That trust is the foundation of a strong customer relationship. It is something that cannot be rushed or automated.

Building Better Technicians Through Experience

Hands-on experience also helps me support and train our team more effectively. At Knox Pest Control, we focus heavily on developing skilled technicians who understand both the technical and human sides of the job.

When I work with new team members, I can relate to their challenges because I have been in their position. I know what it feels like to walk into a difficult situation or face a customer with urgent concerns.

This allows me to provide practical guidance instead of just instructions. I can explain not only what to do, but why it matters. That kind of leadership helps technicians grow faster and perform with more confidence in the field.

Stronger Service Comes from Real Understanding

Service quality improves when leadership understands the details of the work. Hands-on experience allows me to see beyond reports and numbers. It helps me understand how decisions affect daily operations.

For example, scheduling changes, service procedures, and product choices all impact technicians and customers directly. When you have worked in the field, you know how small changes can make a big difference in service quality.

That understanding helps us make better decisions as a company. It ensures that our systems support the people doing the work instead of creating unnecessary challenges.

Trust Is Built Through Consistency

In pest control, trust is earned through consistency. Customers want to know that every visit will meet the same standard of quality. Hands-on experience reinforces that expectation.

When technicians are properly trained and supported, they deliver consistent results. When leadership understands the work, they can set realistic expectations and provide the tools needed for success.

At Knox Pest Control, we focus on making sure every customer receives reliable service. That consistency is one of the reasons many families have stayed with us for years.

Connecting Leadership with the Field

One of the benefits of hands-on experience is staying connected to the field even while in a leadership role. I still make it a priority to understand what our technicians experience on a daily basis.

This connection helps bridge the gap between leadership and operations. It ensures that decisions made at the top reflect the realities of the field.

When leadership is disconnected from the work, it becomes easier to overlook important details. Staying involved helps keep the business grounded and focused on what matters most, which is serving customers effectively.

Strengthening Customer Relationships

Strong customer relationships are built on more than just service calls. They are built on trust, communication, and reliability. Hands-on experience helps strengthen all three.

When customers see that technicians are knowledgeable and confident, they feel more comfortable. When explanations are clear and honest, trust grows. When service is consistent, relationships last.

Many of our customers have been with Knox Pest Control for years. Some families have used our services across multiple generations. That kind of loyalty comes from a combination of good service and strong relationships built over time.

Adapting While Staying Grounded

The pest control industry continues to evolve. New tools, treatments, and methods are constantly being introduced. Hands-on experience helps us evaluate these changes in a practical way.

Instead of adopting new ideas blindly, we look at how they perform in real situations. We test them, evaluate results, and make decisions based on what works best for our customers and technicians.

This balanced approach allows us to stay current without losing the foundation that built our reputation.

Final Thoughts

Hands-on experience has shaped the way I lead Knox Pest Control in Columbus, GA. It has given me a deeper understanding of the work, the customers, and the team that makes everything possible.

As Justin Knox, I believe that strong leadership starts with experience. When you understand the work firsthand, you make better decisions, build stronger relationships, and create a company culture based on trust and respect.

In our business, that connection to the field is what continues to drive better service and stronger customer relationships every day.

The Value of Experience in a Changing Industry

I am Justin Knox, and I lead Knox Pest Control, a fourth-generation family business based in Columbus, GA. Over the years, I have seen the pest control industry change in many ways. Technology has improved, treatment methods have advanced, and customers now expect faster and more efficient service. These changes have helped the industry grow and improve.

Even with all of these advancements, one thing has remained constant. Experience still matters. In pest control, knowledge gained through years of hands-on work can make a significant difference in solving problems effectively. While tools and techniques continue to evolve, the ability to recognize patterns, understand pest behavior, and make smart decisions in the field is something that only comes with experience.

Learning the Business from the Ground Up

My journey in the pest control industry did not begin in an office. It started in the field. I worked as a technician and spent years learning how to identify pest problems, apply treatments, and communicate with customers.

Working in the field taught me that pest control is rarely a simple task. Every home and business is different. Every infestation has its own causes and conditions. Understanding how to evaluate these situations requires training, patience, and real-world experience.

Those early years shaped my understanding of the business and gave me a deep appreciation for the work our technicians perform every day.

Understanding Pest Behavior

One of the biggest advantages of experience in pest control is the ability to understand pest behavior. Different pests respond to different environments, seasons, and treatment methods. Recognizing these patterns helps technicians solve problems more effectively.

For example, termites, rodents, ants, and mosquitoes all behave differently. Each species requires a specific approach to treatment and prevention. Experienced technicians know how to identify the signs early and apply the right solution before the problem becomes worse.

Experience also helps technicians anticipate issues before they appear. Preventative work often depends on understanding what pests are likely to do next.

The Importance of Problem Solving

Pest control is not just about applying treatments. It is about solving problems. Many situations require careful investigation and thoughtful planning.

An experienced technician knows how to look beyond the obvious signs. They examine entry points, environmental conditions, and structural factors that may contribute to an infestation. By understanding the root cause of a problem, they can provide solutions that last longer and protect the property more effectively.

This type of problem solving comes from years of learning, observation, and hands-on work.

Experience Builds Customer Confidence

Customers often feel stressed when they discover pest problems in their homes or businesses. They want reassurance that the person handling the issue knows what they are doing.

Experience helps build that confidence. When technicians can clearly explain the problem, describe the treatment plan, and answer questions with certainty, customers feel more comfortable and secure.

At Knox Pest Control, we believe that communication is just as important as technical skill. Experienced professionals understand how to guide customers through the process and help them feel confident about the solution.

Combining Experience with Modern Innovation

While experience is essential, the pest control industry also benefits from innovation. New tools, monitoring systems, and environmentally responsible treatments have improved the way companies operate.

At Knox Pest Control, we combine decades of experience with modern technology. This approach allows us to provide efficient service while maintaining the reliability our customers expect.

Technology can help improve accuracy and efficiency, but it cannot replace the judgment that comes from experience. The best results happen when experienced professionals use modern tools to enhance their work.

Training the Next Generation

As a fourth-generation leader in the business, one of my responsibilities is helping train the next generation of pest control professionals. Passing down knowledge is an important part of maintaining quality service.

Our technicians receive training in both technical skills and customer service. Experienced team members mentor newer technicians and share the insights they have gained through years of work.

This approach ensures that the knowledge built over decades continues to strengthen the company and benefit our customers.

Building Long Term Relationships

Experience also plays an important role in building long-term relationships with customers. Many of our clients have been with Knox Pest Control for years, and some families have trusted us for multiple generations.

When customers see the same knowledgeable professionals returning to service their property, it builds familiarity and trust. They know they are working with people who understand their property and care about protecting it.

These relationships are one of the most rewarding parts of working in a family business.

Looking Toward the Future

As the pest control industry continues to evolve, experience will remain a valuable asset. New technologies and methods will continue to improve the way we work, but the ability to apply knowledge and judgment will always be important.

At Knox Pest Control, we will continue investing in both training and innovation. By combining experience with modern solutions, we can provide the highest level of service to our customers.

Our goal is to continue protecting homes and businesses in Columbus, GA while maintaining the standards that have defined our company for generations.

Final Thoughts

Experience is one of the most powerful tools in the pest control industry. It shapes how professionals evaluate problems, choose solutions, and communicate with customers.

For Knox Pest Control, experience is part of our foundation. Four generations of dedication have helped us develop the knowledge and skills needed to serve our community effectively.

As Justin Knox, I am proud to continue that tradition. By valuing experience and sharing it with the next generation, we can ensure that our company continues to grow while delivering the dependable service our customers trust.

Early Lessons in Hard Work

I am Justin Knox of Columbus, GA, and I have the privilege of leading a fourth-generation family business in pest control. My journey in this business began long before I became CEO. I started working in the family company at the age of twelve, helping with termite treatments, keeping the office lawn in order, and assisting wherever I was needed. Those early experiences taught me the value of hard work, attention to detail, and the importance of every role in the company.

Starting at the ground level allowed me to see firsthand how every part of the business connects. From the technicians in the field to the office staff managing schedules, each person contributes to the overall success. Understanding this early has been crucial in shaping my leadership approach.

Learning From Past Generations

Leading a fourth-generation family business comes with a deep sense of responsibility. Our company was built by my great-grandfather, Forrest Knox, who started selling pest control services door to door. His dedication and focus on quality service laid the foundation for our family legacy. My grandfather and father continued that tradition, expanding the business while maintaining the values that made it successful.

I learned from them that leadership is not about titles or authority. It is about setting an example, upholding standards, and nurturing relationships with both customers and employees. Observing their approach has helped me shape my own leadership style.

Transitioning to Leadership

After graduating from Troy University in 1997, I joined Knox Pest Control full time. While my early years as a technician were focused on fieldwork, I gradually took on more responsibilities in management and operations. Transitioning from technician to CEO required a combination of hands-on experience, education, and mentorship from family members.

One of the most important lessons I learned during this transition is that leadership is about service. Leading a family business is not about making all the decisions alone. It is about supporting the team, empowering employees, and creating an environment where everyone can succeed.

Maintaining a Customer-First Approach

At the heart of our business is the commitment to our customers. Over four generations, we have learned that trust and loyalty are earned through consistent, high-quality service. As CEO, I make it a priority to maintain that focus.

Every decision we make, from investing in new technology to hiring employees, considers how it will impact our customers. By keeping their needs central, we ensure that the business continues to grow while preserving the values that have defined it for nearly a century.

Empowering the Team

Leading a multi-generational business means recognizing the importance of our employees. They are the people who execute the vision, provide service, and interact with customers daily. I believe in investing in training, offering opportunities for growth, and creating a culture of accountability and pride.

A strong, empowered team allows the business to grow sustainably. When employees feel valued and supported, they perform at a higher level, which strengthens customer relationships and supports long-term success.

Balancing Tradition and Innovation

One of the unique challenges of leading a fourth-generation business is balancing tradition with innovation. Our company has a long history, but the world of pest control continues to evolve. New technologies, treatment methods, and customer expectations require adaptation.

My approach is to respect and preserve the traditions that built the business while embracing changes that improve service and efficiency. This balance ensures that we continue to provide the quality our customers expect while positioning the company for future growth.

Engaging With the Community

Community engagement has always been central to our family business. Being a trusted part of the Columbus, GA community strengthens our reputation and builds long-term relationships. As CEO, I prioritize involvement in local initiatives, support for charitable organizations, and participation in community events.

This approach not only helps the community but also reinforces our values as a family business. Customers and employees alike appreciate a company that gives back, and that commitment strengthens loyalty and trust.

Lessons Learned as a CEO

The transition from technician to CEO has been both challenging and rewarding. I have learned that leadership is about listening, serving, and empowering others. It requires patience, humility, and a willingness to learn from both successes and mistakes.

I have also learned that the foundation of a successful family business is its people. By supporting employees, nurturing customer relationships, and staying true to our family values, the business can grow and thrive across generations.

Looking Ahead

As I continue to lead Knox Pest Control, my focus is on building a business that honors the past while preparing for the future. I aim to continue expanding our regional presence, providing exceptional service, and mentoring the next generation of leaders.

Leading a fourth-generation family business is not just a job. It is a responsibility to the family, employees, customers, and community. By staying true to our values and committing to continuous improvement, we can ensure that the company remains strong and successful for generations to come.

Final Thoughts

The journey from technician to CEO has been shaped by experience, mentorship, and a deep commitment to family values. Leadership is not about titles; it is about service, relationships, and dedication.

As Justin Knox of Columbus, GA, I am proud to carry forward a legacy built over nearly one hundred years. By focusing on people, customers, and community, we continue to grow a business that reflects the values and principles of four generations of our family.

The Importance of Tradition

I am Justin Knox of Columbus, GA, and I have the privilege of leading a fourth-generation family business in pest control. One of the most valuable lessons I have learned over the years is the importance of tradition. Our business began nearly a century ago with my great-grandfather, who walked the streets carrying roach powder and mice bait, building trust and relationships with early customers.

Tradition in our company is more than history. It represents the values and principles that have guided every generation. Honesty, quality service, and strong customer relationships are at the core of what we do. These traditions are what allowed our business to survive challenges, expand, and remain a trusted name in Columbus, GA.

Why Innovation Matters

While tradition is essential, the pest control industry is constantly changing. New technologies, methods, and customer expectations require innovation. Without embracing change, a business can quickly fall behind competitors.

At Knox Pest Control, innovation means finding ways to serve our customers more effectively, improve efficiency, and stay ahead in the industry. It includes adopting advanced treatment methods, investing in modern equipment, and using technology to improve scheduling and communication. Innovation ensures that we can continue to grow and meet the needs of today’s customers while maintaining our high standards.

Combining Tradition with Innovation

The challenge of leading a fourth-generation business is knowing when to honor tradition and when to embrace innovation. At our company, we view them as complementary rather than opposing forces. Tradition provides a strong foundation, while innovation allows us to build on it.

For example, we maintain our commitment to personal service and attention to detail, which has always been a hallmark of our family business. At the same time, we use new technology to streamline processes, track results, and improve communication with customers. By blending these approaches, we are able to offer modern solutions without sacrificing the personal touch that defines our business.

Maintaining Customer Trust

Trust is at the heart of any family business, and it is one of the reasons our customers remain loyal for decades. Balancing tradition and innovation helps us maintain that trust. Customers know that when they call Knox Pest Control, they will receive the same level of care and professionalism that has been our standard for generations.

Innovation can improve service, but it is important that it does not replace the human element. We make sure our customers continue to experience attentive, knowledgeable service. This balance is what sets us apart and allows us to maintain long-term relationships with the families and businesses we serve.

Training and Developing the Team

Innovation requires a skilled and adaptable team. Our employees are trained to understand both the traditional methods that have worked for decades and the modern tools that improve efficiency and results.

By investing in training and professional development, we ensure that every team member can provide high-quality service using both proven methods and new technologies. This approach strengthens the business and prepares the next generation of leaders to continue the legacy of our family company.

Adapting to Industry Changes

The pest control industry is influenced by environmental regulations, new pest challenges, and evolving customer expectations. Staying ahead requires flexibility and innovation. For example, we have adopted environmentally responsible treatment methods and safety protocols to meet the needs of our customers and comply with regulations.

At the same time, we rely on our traditional principles of honesty, reliability, and personalized service to guide every decision. This combination of adaptability and adherence to core values allows us to thrive in a competitive industry while staying true to our roots.

Engaging with the Community

Community engagement is another way tradition and innovation work together. Our family has always believed in giving back to Columbus, GA. Supporting local organizations, participating in events, and building relationships in the community are part of our tradition.

We also innovate by finding new ways to connect with our customers and the community, whether through digital communication, educational programs, or innovative local partnerships. This combination strengthens our reputation and helps us maintain a loyal customer base while reaching new audiences.

Lessons for Other Family Businesses

From my experience, balancing tradition and innovation is a key strategy for long-term success. Family businesses have a rich history and valuable principles, but they must also evolve to remain competitive. Embracing innovation does not mean abandoning the values that built the business.

The most successful businesses find ways to honor their past while preparing for the future. They maintain high standards, invest in their team, adapt to change, and remain committed to their customers and community.

Looking Ahead

As I continue to lead Knox Pest Control in Columbus, GA, my focus is on maintaining the balance between tradition and innovation. We will continue to honor the legacy built by previous generations while adopting new methods and technologies that improve service and support growth.

This balance ensures that our business remains strong, respected, and prepared for future challenges. By combining the best of both worlds, we can continue to provide exceptional service, support our employees, and serve our community for generations to come.

Building Trust from the Start

I am Justin Knox of Columbus, GA, and I have the privilege of leading a fourth-generation family business in pest control. One of the most rewarding parts of my job is seeing customers return year after year. Over decades of service, I have learned that long-term loyalty is not accidental. It is built through consistent actions, trust, and genuine care.

Trust is the foundation of any relationship, including business relationships. Customers need to know that they can rely on you to solve their problems, communicate honestly, and follow through on promises. From the very first interaction, we aim to establish that trust. When customers feel confident that we will handle their needs professionally, they are more likely to stay with us for years.

Listening and Understanding Customer Needs

Every customer has unique concerns and expectations. One of the secrets to loyalty is listening carefully and understanding those needs. At Knox Pest Control, we take the time to assess each situation and provide solutions that are tailored to the customer’s home or business.

Listening goes beyond hearing words. It means understanding the underlying issues and showing empathy. Customers appreciate when they feel understood. That kind of attention builds confidence and strengthens the relationship over time.

Consistent, High-Quality Service

Consistency is another key factor in building loyalty. Customers want to know that they can expect the same level of quality every time they call. Our family business has operated for nearly one hundred years because we maintain high standards across all aspects of service.

From technicians arriving on time to properly completing treatments and communicating clearly, consistency builds trust. Customers notice when a business delivers reliable service, and that reliability becomes a reason they continue to choose us over competitors.

Leading with Integrity

Integrity is central to how we operate. Honesty and transparency are critical for building lasting relationships. When mistakes happen, we address them openly and work to resolve the issue. Customers respect businesses that take responsibility and act with integrity.

In my experience, integrity is not just a value; it is a practical business strategy. Customers recognize when a business operates honestly and consistently, and they reward that behavior with loyalty.

Investing in the Team

Long-term loyalty is not just about customers. It also comes from building a strong, committed team. Our employees are trained to provide excellent service, communicate effectively, and treat customers with respect.

When employees feel supported and confident, they naturally provide better service. This translates into stronger customer relationships. People stay loyal to a business because of the positive interactions they have with the team, and investing in employees ensures that those interactions are consistently excellent.

Going the Extra Mile

Another secret to customer loyalty is going above and beyond. Customers notice when a business cares about more than just completing a job. At Knox Pest Control, we take the time to explain treatments, answer questions, and make sure customers feel comfortable with the process.

Small gestures, such as follow-up calls or checking in after a service, reinforce the message that we care about their satisfaction. Over time, these efforts create lasting bonds that go beyond simple transactions.

Building Relationships, Not Just Business

Loyalty is strongest when a business focuses on relationships rather than short-term gains. Our family has always believed that it is not just about acquiring customers, but keeping them. That mindset has guided our approach for four generations.

By prioritizing relationships, we have customers who have stayed with us for decades. Some families have used our services for multiple generations. That kind of loyalty is priceless and cannot be bought with promotions or discounts. It comes from consistently earning trust and showing that we genuinely care.

Engaging with the Community

Being part of the Columbus, GA community helps strengthen customer loyalty as well. We engage in local events, support organizations, and contribute to initiatives that make a difference. Customers appreciate businesses that are invested in the community, and that engagement reinforces their trust and connection with our company.

A local business that shows it cares about more than just profits creates loyalty not only from customers but from employees and neighbors as well. It becomes a trusted part of the community fabric.

Looking Ahead

As I continue to lead Knox Pest Control, my focus remains on maintaining the values that have earned customer loyalty over generations. We will continue to provide personalized service, maintain high standards, and treat every customer with integrity and respect.

Long-term loyalty is earned through consistent effort and a commitment to relationships. By keeping customers at the center of everything we do, we can continue to grow while preserving the trust that has been built over nearly one hundred years.

Final Thoughts

The secrets to long-term customer loyalty are simple but powerful. Listen, communicate, act with integrity, invest in your team, and go the extra mile. Loyalty does not happen overnight, but it grows steadily when a business focuses on service and relationships.

As Justin Knox of Columbus, GA, I have seen firsthand that customers return not because of promotions or flashy marketing, but because they trust and respect the people behind the business. That trust is the foundation for lasting success, and it is what we work to earn every day.

Honoring a Family Legacy

I am Justin Knox of Columbus, GA, and I have the honor of leading a fourth-generation family business in pest control. Growing up around this company, I learned early that a business is more than just a source of income. It is a legacy, built through decades of hard work, trust, and dedication.

Our family’s story began nearly a century ago with my great-grandfather, who walked the streets with roach powder and mice bait, serving his first customers and laying the foundation for what would become a trusted family business. Each generation added to that legacy, teaching the next the importance of quality, service, and integrity. When I joined the company full time in 1997, I inherited not just a business, but a responsibility to uphold these values while leading the company into the future.

Understanding the Importance of Growth

While honoring our family legacy is essential, staying relevant in today’s market requires growth and adaptation. A business that does not evolve risks falling behind competitors, even if it has a strong history. In Columbus, GA, our market has grown more competitive over the years, and customers’ expectations have changed.

Balancing legacy with growth means recognizing the value of both. We maintain the principles that built the business while adopting modern practices that allow us to better serve our customers. For example, we use advanced scheduling systems, improved treatment methods, and updated training programs for our technicians. These changes help us operate more efficiently while still providing the personal service that customers have come to expect.

Staying True to Core Values

Growth does not mean compromising the values that define our family business. Every decision we make is guided by a commitment to honesty, quality, and service. These values are what have kept customers loyal for generations.

For me, leadership is about making choices that reinforce our reputation. It is tempting at times to prioritize rapid growth, but we have learned that short-term gains are not worth sacrificing trust. Staying true to our core values ensures that we grow responsibly and maintain strong relationships with both customers and employees.

Investing in the Team

A critical part of balancing legacy and growth is investing in the people who make the business successful. Our employees are at the heart of everything we do. We provide training, support, and opportunities for professional growth.

By fostering a culture of accountability and respect, we empower our team to deliver consistent, high-quality service. When employees feel valued and supported, they are more likely to engage with customers in meaningful ways. This investment in our team strengthens the business and ensures that our legacy of service continues to thrive.

Embracing Modern Practices

Modern business practices help us stay competitive without losing the personal touch that defines our legacy. Technology allows us to streamline operations, track performance, and respond quickly to customer needs.

However, we are careful not to let technology replace the human element. Our customers want to interact with people who understand their concerns and can provide solutions tailored to their situation. Balancing efficiency with personal service is key to maintaining our reputation while growing the business.

Engaging with the Community

Part of our legacy is being an active member of the Columbus, GA community. Supporting local organizations, participating in events, and contributing to causes that matter reinforces the values we uphold as a family business.

Community involvement also helps the business grow in meaningful ways. People prefer to work with companies they know and trust, and being visible and engaged in the community strengthens those connections. Legacy and growth go hand in hand when a business serves not only its customers but also the people around it.

Learning from the Past, Planning for the Future

Balancing legacy with modern growth requires reflection and planning. We study the lessons of previous generations while identifying opportunities for improvement. Every decision is made with both the past and the future in mind.

My goal is to continue the growth of Knox Pest Control while ensuring that the principles that built the business remain at the forefront. By combining the experience of past generations with modern strategies, we can maintain our competitive edge and prepare the company for the next generation of leaders.

Leadership Through Service

At the core of our approach is a simple principle: leadership is about service. Leading a family business is not about authority or titles; it is about supporting employees, earning the trust of customers, and making decisions that protect the integrity of the company.

Service-focused leadership strengthens relationships, builds loyalty, and ensures the business continues to thrive. This principle has guided our family for generations and will continue to guide us as we grow.

Looking Ahead

As I look to the future, my focus remains on maintaining a balance between family legacy and modern growth. I am proud of what our family has built in Columbus, GA, and I am excited to continue growing the business responsibly.

By staying true to our values, investing in our team, embracing technology thoughtfully, and remaining engaged with the community, we can honor the past while building a sustainable future. Balancing legacy with growth is not always easy, but it is essential for long-term success and for ensuring that Knox Pest Control continues to serve the community for generations to come.

Starting with Strong Roots

Every lasting business has a beginning rooted in hard work and purpose. For our family, that beginning goes back generations, long before I ever stepped into a leadership role. Today, as Justin Knox of Columbus, GA, I have the responsibility of carrying forward a legacy that started with one simple idea: serve people well and the rest will follow.

What began as a small operation built on personal relationships has grown into a regional pest management company. That growth did not happen overnight, and it did not happen by chance. It happened because each generation stayed committed to the same core values while adapting to a changing world.

Learning the Business from the Ground Up

I did not grow up watching the business from the sidelines. I started working summers at Knox Pest Control when I was twelve years old. My early responsibilities included helping on termite jobs and keeping the office grounds in good shape. At the time, I did not see it as training for leadership. I saw it as work that needed to be done.

Those early experiences taught me responsibility, respect for hard work, and the importance of doing a job right the first time. I learned how every role in a business matters. From the technician in the field to the person answering the phone, each interaction shapes the customer’s experience.

When I joined the company full time after graduating from Troy University in 1997, I already understood the value of learning by doing. That foundation helped prepare me for the leadership responsibilities that would come later.

Growing Beyond Columbus, GA

Columbus, GA has always been home for our family and our business. It is where we built trust, developed relationships, and earned our reputation. As the company grew, we saw opportunities to expand beyond our home market while maintaining the same level of service our local customers expected.

Expanding regionally required careful planning and discipline. Growth can be exciting, but it can also stretch a company too thin if it is not handled thoughtfully. We focused on growing at a pace that allowed us to maintain quality, train our people properly, and preserve our culture.

Staying connected to our roots in Columbus helped guide those decisions. It reminded us that our success depended on how well we served people, not how fast we expanded.

The Role of Family in Long Term Success

Running a family business comes with both rewards and challenges. Working alongside family members requires clear communication, mutual respect, and shared goals. It also creates a level of accountability that is hard to match in any other setting.

In our family, leadership has always been about example. Each generation worked hard, treated employees fairly, and put customers first. That example set the tone for the entire organization. When people see consistency in leadership, it builds trust both inside and outside the company.

Family involvement also brings a long-term perspective. We are not focused on short-term gains. We are focused on building something that will last for future generations. That mindset influences every decision we make.

Adapting Without Losing Our Identity

One of the biggest challenges in growing a family business is adapting to change without losing what makes you unique. The pest control industry has evolved significantly over the years. Technology, customer expectations, and regulations continue to shift.

We have embraced new tools and processes that improve efficiency and service. Digital scheduling, better reporting systems, and advanced treatment methods allow us to serve customers more effectively. But we never let technology replace personal connection.

Our identity is built on relationships. No matter how much we grow, we want customers to feel known and valued. That commitment has helped us expand while maintaining the trust that started in Columbus, GA.

Building a Team That Shares the Vision

A business only grows as strong as the people behind it. One of my priorities as a leader is building a team that shares our values and vision. We look for people who care about their work, take pride in serving customers, and want to grow professionally.

Training and support are essential. We invest in our team so they feel confident in their roles and connected to the company’s mission. When employees feel respected and supported, they are more engaged and committed. That commitment shows in the service they provide.

Lessons in Leadership

Leading a family business taught me that leadership is not about control. It is about guidance, communication, and trust. It means listening to your team, learning from mistakes, and staying focused on long-term goals.

Some of the best lessons I have learned came from challenges. Growth brings complexity, and not every decision is easy. But staying true to our values has helped us navigate change and continue moving forward.

Looking Toward the Future

As I look ahead, I am proud of what our family has built and excited about what is to come. From Columbus, GA to a growing regional presence, our journey has been guided by the same principles that started it all. Hard work, honesty, and service still define who we are.

Building a family business that lasts is not about size or speed. It is about consistency, character, and care for people. If we stay true to those values, I believe our business will continue to serve families and communities for generations to come.

A Legacy Built on Service

When people ask me what sets our business apart, my answer is always the same. It comes down to service. I am Justin Knox of Columbus, GA, and I represent the fourth generation of my family to lead Knox Pest Control. While the tools, technology, and pace of business have changed over the years, one thing has stayed constant. Customer service is the foundation of everything we do.

My great-grandfather started this company by walking the streets of Atlanta, building relationships one customer at a time. He believed that quality service was the key to earning trust and keeping customers for life. That belief carried through my grandfather and father, and it continues to guide me today.

Learning Customer Service the Hard Way

My first lessons in customer service did not come from a training manual. They came from experience. I was twelve years old when I started working summers in the family business. I helped on termite jobs, cleaned equipment, and took care of the office lawn. At the time, it felt like just another summer job. Looking back, I see how those early days shaped my understanding of service.

I learned that every task matters because every task affects the customer experience. A clean truck, a respectful attitude, and a job done right all send a message. They tell customers that you care. Those lessons stuck with me and continue to shape how I lead our team today.

Why Customer Service Still Matters

In today’s world, it is easy to rely on technology to handle customer interactions. Online scheduling, automated messages, and digital billing all have their place. We use these tools at Knox Pest Control because they make life easier for our customers. But technology alone is not customer service.

True service comes from listening, communicating clearly, and following through. Customers want to know that the person coming to their home cares about their problem and is committed to solving it. That personal connection builds trust, and trust builds long-term relationships.

As a business owner in Columbus, GA, I believe local relationships matter more than ever. Our customers are our neighbors. We see them at the grocery store, at school events, and around town. That makes accountability personal, and it pushes us to do our best every single day.

Redefining Service for a New Generation

Redefining customer service does not mean changing our values. It means finding better ways to live them out. Today’s customers expect convenience, clear communication, and fast responses. We work hard to meet those expectations while staying true to our roots.

For us, that means training our technicians not just in pest control, but in people skills. We emphasize respect, professionalism, and clear communication. We want every customer interaction to feel personal, not rushed or transactional.

It also means being proactive. We follow up, check in, and make sure customers feel confident in the service they received. These small steps make a big difference and show customers that they are more than just an account number.

Leading a Team That Cares

Customer service starts inside the company. If employees do not feel supported and valued, it shows in how they treat customers. One of my main responsibilities as a leader is to create a culture where people care about their work and about each other.

I spend a lot of time working with our leadership team to make sure our values are clear and consistent. We encourage open communication, accountability, and teamwork. When someone makes a mistake, we focus on learning and improvement, not blame.

This approach builds confidence and pride. When our team members feel respected, they take ownership of their work. That ownership translates directly into better service for our customers.

Staying Local, Thinking Long Term

Being Justin Knox of Columbus, GA is something I take pride in. Our community has supported our family business for decades, and we do not take that lightly. Staying local keeps us grounded and reminds us why service matters.

We are not focused on short-term wins or cutting corners. Our goal is to build relationships that last for years. That mindset affects every decision we make, from hiring and training to how we handle customer concerns.

Long-term thinking also means adapting without losing our identity. We embrace new ideas and technology, but we never forget that our reputation was built one customer at a time.

What Redefining Service Really Means

Redefining customer service is not about doing more. It is about doing better. It is about being intentional, consistent, and genuine. Customers can tell when service is real and when it is just a script.

For me, redefining service means honoring the legacy that came before me while preparing the business for the future. It means teaching the next generation that success is earned through effort, integrity, and care for others.

Looking Ahead

As I look to the future, I am confident that customer service will continue to be our greatest strength. Markets will change, technology will evolve, and expectations will rise. But people will always value honesty, reliability, and personal connection.

That belief has carried our family business through four generations, and it will carry us forward. Being a business leader in Columbus, GA is about more than running a company. It is about serving people well and leaving things better than you found them.

That is how we redefine customer service, and that is how we build something that lasts.

The Meaning of Leadership

When people hear the word “leader,” they often picture someone in charge. Maybe it is a CEO, a manager, or someone with an office and a title. But over the years, I have learned that real leadership has very little to do with titles. True leadership starts with service. It is about how you treat people, how you show up every day, and how willing you are to put others before yourself.

In a family business like ours, this idea has been passed down through generations. My great-grandfather started Knox Pest Control with nothing but a leather satchel and a strong work ethic. He built his reputation by serving his customers well. That same spirit of service has guided our family for nearly a century, and it continues to shape how I lead today.

Learning to Lead by Serving

My first lessons in leadership did not come from a classroom or a business book. They came from sweeping floors, mowing lawns, and mixing termite treatments during the summer months when I was a kid. I was twelve years old when I started working at our family’s pest control company. I did not have a title or any special responsibility, but I was part of something bigger than myself.

Those early years taught me what it means to work hard and take pride in even the smallest job. I learned that leadership starts with doing your part, no matter how simple the task may seem. When you are willing to get your hands dirty, people notice. They see that you respect the work, and in return, they begin to respect you.

That experience shaped how I approach leadership today. I believe that to lead effectively, you must first understand what it takes to serve, whether it is your customers, your employees, or your community.

The Heart of a Servant Leader

The best leaders I have known all share one thing in common: they put people first. They take time to listen. They care about their employees’ well-being. They celebrate others’ success. That is the heart of a servant leader.

In our business, service is everything. We are invited into people’s homes and trusted with their comfort and safety. That kind of trust is not given lightly, it is earned. The same principle applies inside the company. Our team members need to know that I value them, that I am willing to listen, and that their hard work matters.

Some days that means rolling up my sleeves and working alongside them. Other days, it means taking the time to sit down and talk through a challenge. It also means being humble enough to admit when I do not have all the answers. Leadership is not about being the smartest person in the room. It is about helping others succeed.

Leading by Example

Growing up in a family business, I was surrounded by people who led by example. My father and grandfather never asked someone to do something they would not do themselves. Whether it was treating a termite job or visiting a customer, they showed what leadership looked like through action, not words.

That example stuck with me. Today, when new employees join our team, I remind them that no task is beneath anyone. Leadership is built through consistency, humility, and follow-through. When you say you are going to do something, you do it. When you make a mistake, you own it. Those simple actions build trust and set a standard for everyone around you.

It is easy to think leadership is about making big decisions or setting strategy, but most of the time, it is about the small things. It is about how you greet your team in the morning, how you respond to a problem, and how you treat people when no one is watching.

Service Builds Stronger Teams

A culture of service does not just make you a better leader, it makes your whole team stronger. When everyone is focused on helping each other and serving the customer, success naturally follows. People are more motivated when they feel valued and respected.

At Knox Pest Control, we talk a lot about teamwork. Our business only works when everyone plays their part, from the office staff answering phones to the technicians out in the field. Each person contributes to the customer experience, and every job matters. By building a culture where service is at the center, we create an environment where people feel proud of what they do.

We celebrate our wins together and support each other during challenges. That sense of unity comes from knowing that leadership is not about hierarchy, it is about helping one another succeed.

The Ripple Effect of Service

Service has a ripple effect that goes far beyond the walls of a business. When you treat your employees well, they treat customers well. When customers feel valued, they become loyal. That loyalty allows your business to grow, and that growth allows you to give back to your community.

I have seen firsthand how a mindset of service creates lasting impact. Whether it is through supporting local events, helping families in need, or providing jobs that support other families, leadership through service strengthens everything it touches. It builds not just a successful company, but a legacy worth passing on.

The Title Does Not Define the Leader

At the end of the day, a title is just a word. What defines a leader is how they serve others. It is about the example you set, the respect you show, and the difference you make in people’s lives.

When I look back at what my great-grandfather started, I see more than a business. I see a legacy of service that has carried through four generations. That same principle will continue to guide us into the future.

True leadership is not about standing above others. It is about standing beside them, ready to serve, to listen, and to lead with heart. That is what makes a title meaningful, and that is the kind of leadership that lasts.

Learning from the Past

When I think about what makes our family business strong, it always comes back to one thing: the lessons passed down through generations. Knox Pest Control has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up watching my father, grandfather, and great-grandfather work hard, treat customers like family, and take pride in every job. What started with my great-grandfather walking the streets of Atlanta with a leather satchel full of roach powder and mouse bait has turned into a company that now serves customers across the Southeast.

That kind of growth does not happen by accident. It comes from a foundation built on values that never go out of style: honesty, integrity, hard work, and service. Those are the principles that shaped me as a young man sweeping the floors and helping on termite jobs during summer breaks. They are the same principles that guide me now as I lead our team into a new era of pest management.

Honoring Tradition While Embracing Change

One of the biggest challenges of running a fourth-generation business is balancing the old with the new. My family taught me that tradition matters, but so does progress. We cannot lead with yesterday’s methods alone, but we also cannot forget the lessons that got us here.

When I first started working full-time after graduating from Troy University in 1997, I was eager to modernize everything. Technology was advancing, customer expectations were changing, and the industry was evolving fast. Over time, I learned that the best way to grow is not to replace our traditions but to build on them. The personal relationships, the focus on quality, and the dedication to doing things right the first time are what keep customers coming back. Technology just helps us do it better and faster.

At Knox Pest Control, we have invested in tools that make our operations more efficient and our services more precise. But no piece of software can replace a handshake, a smile, or a genuine thank-you. Our customers stay with us because they trust us, and that trust comes from generations of consistent care.

Family Lessons that Still Matter

Growing up in a family business means your lessons start early. I was twelve when I first joined the summer crew, helping with termite treatments and mowing the office lawn. At the time, I did not realize I was being taught leadership. My father and grandfather believed that every job, no matter how small, deserved effort and respect.

Those early years taught me responsibility, humility, and teamwork. I learned to show up on time, to listen more than I spoke, and to always finish what I started. These values shape how I lead today. I expect the same commitment from our team that my family expected from me.

My parents also showed me what it means to treat employees like family. Many of our team members have been with us for decades. We celebrate their successes, support them through challenges, and value their input. A strong company culture starts with respect, and that lesson is as relevant today as it was a hundred years ago.

Passing the Torch

Another part of running a multigenerational business is preparing the next generation to lead. My wife and I have three children, and while they are still young, I already see the importance of teaching them the same principles I was taught. Whether or not they choose to join the family business one day, they will benefit from learning the value of hard work and integrity.

Leadership is not just about managing people or making decisions. It is about setting an example. When the next generation sees that you take pride in your work and care deeply about the people you serve, they begin to understand what leadership really means. My hope is that they will carry those lessons with them in whatever they do.

Adapting Without Losing Identity

Every family business faces the pressure to adapt. Markets shift, customers evolve, and technology changes how we operate. The key is to stay flexible without losing your identity. For us, that means continuing to provide reliable pest control services while finding new ways to meet customer needs.

Whether it is using environmentally friendly products, offering online scheduling, or investing in better training for our technicians, every improvement we make builds on the legacy of quality that has defined our business since day one. Our name stands for something, and I take that seriously.

Building a Legacy That Lasts

Being part of a fourth-generation family business is both a privilege and a responsibility. Each generation before me worked hard to build something meaningful, and it is my job to protect and grow that legacy. But a legacy is not about buildings, trucks, or numbers. It is about people.

It is about the customers who trust us to protect their homes. It is about the employees who give their best every day. And it is about the families who continue to believe in what we stand for. The greatest lesson my family taught me is that success is not measured by how much you grow, but by how well you serve.

As I look ahead, I know that our company will continue to evolve. But no matter how much things change, the foundation will always be the same: strong values, honest work, and a commitment to people. That is the true blueprint for lasting success.
